Today, I’m going to breathe some new life into this Remington 870. This shotgun came to us as a Pennsylvania State Patrol surplus buy. So it’s had a long life, but there is still a lot left in it. The goal today is to get rid of the beat up stock and forend. To do that, we’re going to use a Hogue Overmolded Stock Set.

First step in the process is to get the shotgun chucked up in the Brownells Multi-vise. Now, I’ve already removed the buttplate using a number two Phillips and we’re going to get into the first of the specialty tools for this project. This is the Buttstock Bolt Bit. It’s a sleeved flathead screwdriver that will keep you on the buttstock bolt and won’t allow the tool to bind-up inside the stock.

With the old stock off, let’s take a look at the new buttstock. The Hogue recoil pad is held on by a couple of small Phillips head screws that are inside two small access holes. To loosen those screws, I’ve got the Brownells Long Phillips Head Screwdriver and adding a little lube will make the job a little easier.

Now, that those items out of the way, we’ll address the new Hogue Buttstock Bolt. It’s slightly shorter than the factory Remington bolt. To get it in place, you’ll need to use a 7/16ths socket.

Here’s a tip, go ahead, build your socket up. Get the bolt in place then find your way through the stock before presenting it to the receiver. By starting the bolt, it makes it a lot easier to find the threads in the receiver. With the recoil pad back in place, the buttstock is all finished.

Let’s turn our attention to removing the forend. We need to remove the magazine tube cap. If it’s too tight to hand loosen, use the Brownells Magazine Tube Cap Pliers. Once you get that loose, the barrel will come off. Next, take the shotgun out of the vise and squeeze the shell stop spring that’s on the bottom sides of the receiver. The complete assembly should come out as a whole. You’ll want to set those two pieces aside.

Next, it’s time to remove the forend from the action tube and the action bars. To do that, you’ll need to loosen the slotted nut with the Brownells Forend Tool. The tabs here will catch these notches. Over time the wood may have expanded or contracted due to the environment. So it may be a little sticky against the action tube.

With the nut out of the way, the Hogue forend is a simple replacement. Build it back up with that factory slotted nut then reassemble the rest of shotgun. To slide the action back into the receiver, you have to press the right then the left shell catches to allow the receiver to slip in. And finally the barrel, followed by the magazine cap and you’re done.
