Today I am going to be shooting my new nine-millimeter Colt Combat Commander, and I’ve got a new skill drill for you. It’s called the John Wick Drill. The John Wick Movies are real popular in the gun culture today.
This drill consists of three IDPA Targets. Target one (T1) is at three yards, one pace to the left. Then, the second target (T2) is at five yards and one pace to the right. And, target three (T3) is in the middle, at seven yards.
I will always start at low ready position, finger out of the trigger guard. If you have a manual safety, it will be engaged at low ready.
On the signal, first time I will come up and fire two rounds at each target, T1, T2 and T3 in that order.
Then, I’ll recharge my pistol, come back to ready again.
Second string: three rounds on T1, two rounds on T2, one round on T3, recharge my pistol.
And, my third string will be one round on T1, two on T2 three on T3. By the way, T1 must be a headshot.
There are a total of 18 rounds.
NowI will have three different times. Then, we will add up the times when we’re done.
Let's give it a try. Now, let’s see how I did: T1 clean, T2 clean, T3 clean.
My time total: just a hair under 8.5 seconds.
Now, here’s the scoring system: anybody under eight seconds is very John Wick-like. 8.01 to 9.00 seconds, you’re good. 9.01 to 10 seconds, you’re OK. 10.01 to 12 seconds, you need to practice. 12 and above, you need to practice and dry fire.
Give it a try at your range, and remember the core take away from this drill is that you’ve got to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You never get better, you never learn as long as you stay in your comfort zone.
Good luck and, by the way, John Wick was shooting blanks in the movie.
