Concealed Carry Options

07Todd1-1

There are over 40 states now that allow some type of concealed carry. Today we are going to talk about learning how to draw out of fanny packs, cross draws; maybe you are a shoulder holster guy, maybe you like being able to draw from an ankle holster. I am going to give you some real quick tips about using these methods of carry, but first of all let’s get started on learning how to control a small handgun.

07Todd1-2

Whatever type of weapon you might be able to use for concealed carry, consider the caliber, the over all size of it and should it be a semi-auto or a revolver. These are things that we need to figure out when we go to buy a gun. Think about the short sight radius you may have on certain guns. Think about a revolver’s very short sight radius with a short barrel on it. Depending on the mission, you may want a longer sight radius. I tell everybody the longer the sight radius the more accurate you are going to be. The smaller the sight radius the more important it is to be able to hang on and grip the gun tightly. I want to talk about the grip real quick for you.

Consider a 380 model, very light recoil in the gun but you have to hang on to the gun with a nice firm grip in order for the gun to cycle and pick up the next round correctly. If you don’t want to worry about that, you can go to a revolver which allows you to pull the trigger each and every time for every round, but you only have five rounds. You must learn how to hang on to the gun with a nice firm grip.

Now I just shot a five shot group with a very small sight radius revolver here. You’ll notice that I shot a fairly good group with it. You have got to be able to find the ammo that works best for you, but most of all you have got to go out and practice and learn how to grip the gun correctly in order to get a group like that.

That was 1.07 seconds out of concealed carry, off of the belt. You must consider the speed at which you can get your concealed carry weapon out of where you might want to carry it. So understand, you need to do this around the two-second mark at seven yards away for one shot. You need to practice this. If you can’t draw and fire in under two seconds, you should consider another technique of concealed carry.

You just saw me draw from six different methods of concealment. Remember that two-second rule that I talked about. I tell my students when you are out on the range make sure you get the right equipment to be able to draw and break that barrier.

Understand, that if you don’t practice with your concealed carry weapon on a regular basis, you should consider not carrying one. That’s my opinion.

I hope all of you will be on the range with a Serpa holster and breaking that two-second barrier. Good luck and I will see you soon on the range.
