Trigger Control

11Todd2-1

Trigger Jerk.  Why do most right handed shooters shoot low and left on a target?  Most of the time they are concerned about the recoil from firing the gun.  That’s number one.  Always concentrate on the front sight, placing your finger into the trigger, pressing it to the rear, letting the front sight lift and return.  Do not be concerned about the recoil of the gun.

Let’s look at a couple of other techniques. Let’s talk about some different trigger actions on the market today.  Some triggers are double action only.  Some are double-single action, like the Beretta 92F.  I can cock the hammer, load the gun and shoot in single action mode, which gives me a lighter trigger pull, which gives me less jerk.

The M&P is a striker fired gun, usually gives you about a five to six pound trigger pull out of the box. Very similar to the 1911, which gives you a five to six pound trigger pull.  Gives you a better shot on the target.

Another tip to reduce recoil while shooting on the range is to get ammo that is a lighter load.  You’ll find that the lighter loads will shoot the same impact as your defense ammo.

Here’s a great technique for firearms instructors out there, working with their students to eliminate trigger jerk and the shock of firing  the gun.  What we’re going to do is let Keith here fire about three rounds down range with a blind target, so he can just feel that recoil.  O.K. Keith, finger out of the trigger.  O.K, this time I’m going to let you control that recoil holding the gun a little tighter.

Now, watch what happens this time around.  I’m going to pull the trigger for you.  You just watch and feel what happens here. O.K., he never knew that the gun was going to go off, because I was pulling the trigger. Always know your target and make sure you’re very close to the berm here.  Thank you Keith.

Hey, let’s try some rifle training now. Even a black rifle, held incorrectly can give you trigger jerk. I tell everybody, hold more pressure on the front end, and pull back to the body.  Loosen up that grip in order to pull that trigger.  Good luck. I’ll see you soon on the range.
