Perfecting the Draw

12Todd4-1

Today’s tip is understanding how to grip your gun out of the holster, your presentation to the target, eye dominance, safety, and different positions in learning how to draw your gun down range. The draw by far is the most important part of your presentation, in getting rounds off down range. So when I go to grip the gun in the holster, I want to make sure I get a firm grip where I am underneath the trigger guard, and my finger is laying along the frame of the gun. It is going to give me the highest position to the center of the bore, or the axis.

12Todd4-2

Ok, the trigger finger should be out always, but as I go down and grab the grip I tell myself, that’s what I need to feel. That’s the perfect grip.

Now we have established grip, now we are looking for the presentation to the target. The key thing is to make sure that the gun comes from underneath and through the target, and not above it, with the muzzle in the air, and your hands hiding the target. As I come up I want the muzzle up and out and driving to the target, to full arm extension.

What does this also give me?  My eye dominance.  Both eyes are wide open and you will see that I am looking right down the sights with my dominant eye.  Now let’s shoot some bullets and we’ll show you how important it is to have the right presentation to the target.

We are going to find our natural point of aim. What I am going to do is have my trusty assistant here, John, he is going to take away one of my senses so I can’t see the target.  I am looking to be able to, from my presentation, to be able to land and understand where my natural point of aim is going to be. So we move this away and we will notice that we have a nice tight group, but my natural point of aim felt like I was comfortable dead center on the target.

Well guess what, we’ve got to make a correction, because my natural point of aim is now to the right. Ok, we’ve made a small correction, only about an inch and a half back, even though we are only at six yards away here We are going to do exactly the same drill by only moving my support leg around, and never the holster side, this is always pointing at the target. So John let’s do it again.  John lines me up here, now hopefully I have a nice center mass hit in the target, so I tell myself this is my natural point of aim.

Now let’s talk about the safety aspects of drawing and presenting to the target.  One of the important things I am looking for is making sure when you draw the gun that you don’t muzzle sweep your support hand as you are going to the target. Let that support hand come in here.  Let that muzzle clear. And level the gun, driving it to the target.

You go to place a pistol that is loaded or unloaded back in your holster do a visual, watch it go back into the holster and lock in place.  These are the key elements that you are going to need to be successful and safe on the street or in competition.  Good luck and I will see you soon on the range.
