Holster Draw Drills

12Todd6-1

Hey, it’s Todd Jarrett with a Pro Tip on the five different elements on learning how to draw in different directions.

12Todd6-2

This is my favorite drill to use on the range which I’ve been teaching my students for over 20 years now. It is called the Round About Drill.

12Todd6-3

12Todd6-4

Position one will be facing the target, having the proper stance, hips and shoulders in line, while trying not to move your head.

12Todd6-4A

Position two, will be facing left of the target. Don’t cheat by looking towards the target. Always make sure not to identify the target by looking at it. You want to be able to identify that target as you draw the gun.

12Todd6-7

There are two ways of looking at the target in position three. I can draw the gun and can step back to the target or I can draw and step into the target. Those are the two things you’re looking for when you are doing left side or right side drills.

Now, let's take a look at positioning towards the target. This is more about manipulating the body than turning the body around. What you want to do is make sure that you have the proper footwork that you lead on.

12Todd6-10

For position four, whether you lead with the right foot or the left foot, the key thing is making sure the gun is in the direction of the target, when you draw it from the holster. So for a right handed shooter, my gun is on the right side. I want to make sure I keep the gun up and out.

12Todd6-11

And in position five, as a right handed shooter moving to the left, this drill becomes even more difficult. You want to make sure you do not sweep anybody who might be on your right side as you draw the gun. So what you’re looking for here, is making sure you have great presentation, and safety at all times.

Sometimes I’ll change the drill up by drawing with my weak hand.

And for my friends in law enforcement that use a drop leg duty holster, or carry somewhere else on your body, you may want to practice this transition drill with your rig.

These five positions will by far help you become a better setup shooter. So the next time you’re out on the range, try the Round About Drill. Good luck, and I’ll see you on the range.
