Hey guys, today’s class is going to be on target acquisition. What I’ve got here are these three targets and I’m going to break down for you exactly what I did for every shot and in between each target. So lets go down the range and look at these targets.

Okay, what I’d like to do for you is break down this series of shots and give you some idea of exactly what I’m seeing when I’m firing each shot and in between targets.
The key thing here is when you’re engaging a target, you have to be aware of the top of the front sight. When I make the first shot, of course, your going to have a little bit of recoil. Not a bad thing. It comes back in on target.

As soon as you fire the second shot, the key thing here is to leave your front sight and find your next target. So as soon as I fire my second shot, I’m looking right here. I see the revolver coming in. As it approaches the target, I’m starting my trigger pull again. I break a shot. As I come down for the second shot, I want to be really aware of where the top of that front blade is.

The key thing here on this performance is to have the ability to read your hits and your misses off of the top of the front sight. Your not just making a series of shots you’re making an aimed shot for each presentation to the target. So as soon as the gun recoils up, you have the ability to move visually and find your next target.

Okay, we’re going to talk a little bit more about target acquisition and following the front sight. If you are a novice shooter and you find yourself having difficulty leaving the front sight and acquiring the next target, that’s not a problem that’s just part of learning. What you’re looking for is to build some consistency and have some technique you can go back to. So when you find yourself making a second shot, if you need to ride the front sight coming into the next target, that’s not a problem. Just go ahead and do it. But as you progress, it’s mandatory that you leave the front sight and acquire the next target, because the speed level is going to increase and that’s just the way it is.
What I’m going to do next is spread these targets out a little bit and it’s going to really make me leave the sight to find the next target, because as the targets get further apart, I have to acquire each visually long before I get there. So I will know when to start stopping the gun.
