Travis Tomasie - Speed Re-Load

USAMU4-1

It is one of the most impressive displays of technique in all of shooting. Not only is it important to the sportsman and competitive shooter, but it can prove to be life saving for military and law enforcement. On today’s pro tip, I’m going to show you how to make your own re-load, a speed re-load.

As you can see, I’ve switched to my production gun. There’s three steps involved in performing a speed re-load. The first is activating the mag release while simultaneously drawing a fresh magazine. I use two points of contact to hold my magazine, one is the tip of the index finger on the nose of the bullet and second is the base of the magazine on the step of my palm. In step two, we’re going to visually acquire the mag well and insert the fresh magazine. In the third and final step, we’re going to rotate the pistol at the target and re-acquire our sights. During this entire procedure it’s crucial that you keep your finger outside the trigger guard to avoid an accidental discharge. Let’s put this re-load technique to the test.

I’m now going to attempt something that’s never been done before. I’m going shoot this popper and before it hits the ground I’m going to re-load and re-engage the popper. Now, this re-load will have to be done under a second. Let’s see if we can do it.

All right, that re-load was under a second. Now it’s important to note that during this entire sequence, I kept the pistol at eye level. I do this for two reasons. One, it makes it easier to see the mag well, and two, it keeps my peripheral vision down range, thereby enhancing my situational awareness.

Now lets cover re-loading while moving. We’re going to apply all the same techniques, however, pay careful attention to where I start the re-load. Then notice, I started the re-load simultaneously with exiting the shooting position. I do this for two reasons. One, it will allow me maximum opportunity to prepare to acquire the next shooting position, and two, it will give me a faster overall time.

With a little practice and by applying these techniques you, too, can make you own re-load a speed re-load. Until next time, stay Army strong.
