S&W IDPA Indoor Nationals

Shooting USA - The Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

28-14-1We’re inside, in the dead of winter, at the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center, but the action is hot in the IDPA Indoor Nationals. It’s defensive scenarios drawn from real life that provide good training and good competition.

The International Defensive Pistol Association, or IDPA, has exploded in popularity since the beginning in 1996. Now with more than 13,000 members in 36 countries, the goal is to test shooters using real world equipment in real life scenarios. Expensive race guns aren’t allowed in IDPA matches, only the same stock guns that you could buy off the shelf in any gun shop.

28-14-2The matches are a combination of good training for concealed carry permit holders, that’s become one of the most popular forms of competition, with the Indoor National Championship held each year in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Indoor Nationals brings out the best in the sport to compete for the titles in the five divisions defined by the choice of carry gun.

  • Stock Service Pistol – Stock Double Action / Safe Action factory pistols such as Glock, Beretta, S&W M&P, Ruger, Browning and Sig.
  • Enhanced Service Pistol – for Single Action 9mm / 38 Super / 40 S&W service pistols, such as the Browning HP, EAA Witness, and 1911 pattern pistols.
  • Custom Defensive Pistol – 45 Auto single stack pistols and Hi Cap models in 45 such as Para, STI, SVI and Glock 20 / 21 models.
  • Stock Service Revolver – for popular service revolvers loaded with speed loaders or one round at a time.
  • Enhanced Service Revolver - revolvers loaded using moon clips.

28-14-3Within each division, competitors are ranked by skill level and compete in their classes for match awards: Novice, Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert, and Master.
