The Garand Match at Camp Perrys

Shooting USA - The Garand Match at Camp Perry

28-15-1It is the biggest service rifle competition at the National Matches. We’re at Camp Perry for the M-1 Garand match with America’s historic service rifle. Then a look at the history of John Garand’s creation at the Springfield Armory.

General George Patton called it, “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” That may be the most famous statement made about John C. Garand’s semi-auto service rifle. The M-1 is the rifle that out gunned the Axis forces as the greatest generation prevailed in the worldwide struggle for freedom and democracy. Today the M-1 is an icon of history, and a very popular rifle for competition in the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s John C. Garand Match.

28-15-2We’re taking you to the firing line for the most popular event in the annual National Matches.

CMP Directory, Gary Anderson says, “It’s a piece of history and a lot of people feel like it’s an honor just to be able to shoot this rifle for what it represents. Also, it’s an accessible match, you can buy an M-1 Garand for five or $600 that will allow you to compete in an event like this. You don’t have to buy a lot of expensive equipment.”

And you can qualify to buy a Garand directly from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. All it takes is a membership in a recognized shooting club, like the USPSA.
