It’s the second largest Scholastic Clay Target Program event of the year, with more than 1000 youngsters breaking clays in Nashville. Plus, LAPD’s finest compete for bragging rights in the Top Gun Match. And is it a pistol? Is it a carbine? The Model of 1855 is one of History’s Guns.

SCTP Tennessee Championships

32-17-1The Scholastic Clay Target Program teaches school-age shooters valuable lessons in sportsmanship, discipline, and promotes safe fun with firearms. The SCTP started as a trap shooting program and as clay target sports have grown, so has the program. SCTP now includes all three clay target shooting sports, Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. The popularity of clay shooting has made the SCTP the biggest and most successful youth shooting program in the country, and has a history of launching SCTP champions on to Olympic competition with the US Shooting Team.

32-17-3One of the largest SCTP events in the nation is in Nashville, TN, with over 1,400 youngsters breaking clays at the Tennessee SCTP State Championships. For five days, school-age kids from all over the volunteer state are competing in trap, skeet, and sporting clays. The youngsters are grouped by their age and shooting experience into divisions like Rookies, Intermediates, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. The Scholastic Clay Target Program is the beginning of a lifetime of enjoyment in the shooting sports for thousands of youngsters nation-wide.

History’s Guns - The U.S. Model 1855 Pistol Carbine

32-17-8

Is it a pistol or is it a carbine? Actually, it is both. The U.S. Model 1855 Pistol Carbine is what our firearms historian Garry James calls; “a neat looking gun” with superb“ quality of the workmanship”.

32-17-9However, the Model 1855 did have a few drawbacks. Either way this best of both worlds firearm played an important role in the Civil War and is now one of History’s Guns.

The LAPD Top Gun Match

32-17-7

The Los Angeles Police Department has led the way in law enforcement for nearly 80 years, as the the first to establish a police academy, the first to organize and train a SWAT team, and the department has long promoted marksmanship.

32-17-5

Just minutes outside downtown Los Angeles at the historic Los Angeles Police Academy ranges, 30 teams of four are competing in the annual Top Gun Duty Gear Match for prizes and bragging rights.  The competition is mostly for fun, but if an element of training creeps into the challenges, that’s OK, too.

32-17-6The Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club, or LAPRAAC, hosts the annual competition with officers competing as on four stages of fire on the historic ranges that date back to the 1932 Olympics. Most of the challenges are familiar to the officers, but not all.

Camo to Match the Precision

32-17-14You may remember the Remington 700 Action John built-up using a Bergara barrel and McRee Precision stock, topped off with a Bushnell Tactical optic. The accuracy was great, but the rifle didn’t look like the tack-driver it had become. That was until Boyd Lemons at Hillbilly223 added a highly detailed reptile camo finish. Boyd and crew specialize in custom Cerakote and DuraCoat finishes that are highly durable. Prices start around $330 for long guns and $180 for pistols.
