Hornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland

Shooting USAHornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland

It’s happening again! Zombies are invading Nebraska! It’s Hornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland that’s become a tradition in five years of competition and weekend fun. Plus, the Model One, the first successful firearm from Smith & Wesson, is now one of History’s Guns. And the Les Baer Custom Ladies Pistol Team celebrates 20 years of shooting competition at Camp Perry.

Hornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland

35-14-2From comic books to video games, zombies have become part of America’s pop culture even in the shooting sports. A zombie three-gun match has also become a tradition for Hornady Manufacturing. Hundreds of competitors armed with their modern sporting rifles, shotguns, and semi-autos, must rid mid-America of the scourge of the zombies. It’s a multi-gun competition like no other called Hornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland.

35-14-1“It is a terrific match, because it’s designed around fun. And the line that we use is, ‘Run with what you Brung,’” says President, Steve Hornady. “If you don’t have a gamer’s handgun, and a special rifle, and a hot-shot shotgun; and you’ve just got the stuff you’ve got at home, you come out and shoot that. And you’ll have fun.”

35-14-3Each year, Hornady hosts the fun and challenging run-and-gun match at the Heartland Public Shooting Park in Grand Island, Nebraska. Depending on the course of fire, one, two or three firearms will be used, but you can count on zombie targets hiding just about everywhere.

History’s Guns - Smith & Wesson Model 1

35-14-12No company is better known for building quality wheel guns than Smith & Wesson. The company has been building revolvers for 160 years, and all along engineers preferred numbers to describe those revolvers. The revolver success began in 1857 when the first wheel gun was produced. It was a seven-shot, single action, rimfire revolver, logically named the Model 1.

“The Smith & Wesson Number 1 is one of the most important firearms in American and possibly world history,” says Firearms Historian Garry James. “I mean, this is the gun that put Smith & Wesson on the map and made them a viable company.”

National Matches at Camp Perry: Les Baer Ladies Team

35-14-9In 1903, Congress passed legislation to establish the National Matches, a series of competitions that would improve the nation’s marksmanship. Today, the tradition continues with hundreds of civilians, law enforcement officers, and military teams making the trip to Ohio to the shores of Lake Erie. Camp Perry has played host to the National Matches for 110 years, and for the last 20 years, a group of ladies continues to compete as the representatives for both Les Baer Custom and for women in the shooting sports.

“You know we have to grow this sport,” says Kimberly Hobart-Fleming, one of the members of the team. “We want to see it continue for a long time. I'm planning on being here for another 30 years.”
