Shooting USA - Hornady’s Zombie 3-Gun
Once again Zombies invade Nebraska! But three gunners are ready to defend at Hornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland. Plus, Trevor Baucom leads wounded warriors into IDPA competition in the latest HAVA event for disabled veterans. Then, John’s got a new precision rifle and the new cartridge to fuel it, the fast and flat shooting 6mm Creedmoor. And from history, the one-and-done service rifle, the 30-40 Krag.
Hornady’s Pandemic in the Heartland
 Zombies have returned to the Heartland Public Shooting Park in Nebraska for the sixth summer in a row! It’s Hornady Manufacturing’s annual three-gun competition with 400 shooters taking on zombie targets with pistol, rifle and shotgun. The run-and-gun match has ten courses of fire with unique and challenging obstacles, like shooting from an unstable boat. Some shooters compete to win, while others compete to have fun.
 “That’s a lot of what this zombie match is, is to go out there and be a great big kid,” says Hornady Manufacturing CEO Steve Hornady. “At the end of the day, it’s just pulling the trigger and knocking down plates, and it’s just fun stuff.”
The Pandemic in the Heartland is equally appealing to Professional Shooters and newcomers alike. Even junior shooters, such as 14-year-old Dakota Overland, are taking part in Hornady’s three-gun match. To her, competing in the shooting sports is a lifestyle she plans to maintain well into the future.
 “It’s just really fun to be able to do something that anyone at any age can participate at,” says the young shooter. “It’s not something that you’re just going to do in high school and then you’re going to leave behind. It is something that you can do forever.”

History’s Guns: Krag Jorgenson
 As firearms technology was rapidly advancing in the 1890s, the U.S. Army was searching for a rifle to replace the single-shot Springfield Trapdoor. That replacement would be the Krag Jorgensen. The Krag is best known for its superb machined receiver with the distinctive side-loading magazine, which holds five rounds of .30-40 Krag.
Still, the Krag did have shortcomings, which contributed to its short lifespan as a US service rifle.
Wounded Warriors Introduced to Defensive Pistol Competition
 A fun day punching holes in targets for a group of injured veterans is just what Trevor Baucom envisioned. He’s the former Blackhawk Pilot, and Smith & Wesson’s first Pro Shooter confined to a wheelchair. Now his mission is not only to compete, but Trevor is also tasked with introducing wounded warriors to International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) competition, with help from Smith & Wesson and Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA), which creates hunting and shooting activities for wounded warriors.
 “Smith & Wesson’s been immensely supportive of the whole thing. As soon as I brought the idea up they were all about it,” says Trevor. “They helped us set it up, they gave us the space. They’re letting us use the guns and the ammo. And it’s been a good day!”

GA Precision Tempest in 6mm Creedmoor
 GA Precision is out with a new rifle that will increase your accuracy in the field thanks to the new Tempest Action. Many long guns have a 90-degree bolt throw, but George Gardner and his team created a three-lug design with a 60-degree bolt throw, which limits rifle disturbances in between shots. The footprint of the action is Remington 700, and from there, this rifle has a handful of add-ons: Manners PRS-1 stock, Badger bottom metal, Trigger Tech trigger, Accuracy International AW magazines, Bartlein GAP-6 barrel and an American Precision Arms muzzle break. The entire system is chambered in 6mm Creedmoor, which is becoming a popular cartridge used in Precision Rifle Series Competition. The GA Precision Tempest, which includes all of these modifications, is about $5,000.

Hornady’s 6mm Creedmoor ELD Match
 Precision Rifle Series competitors and hunters are always on the prowl for a faster, flatter-flying cartridge, and the 6mm Creedmoor fits that bill. It’s both quicker and flatter than another popular cartridge used in competition, the 6.5 Creedmoor. Hornady’s ELD Match line of 6mm Creedmoor ammunition consists of 108-grain bullets. It’s a slimmer projectile standing next to the 6.5 Creedmoor. A box of 20 rounds can be found for $38.

 Bushnell Elite Tactical’s new optic is the DMR II. It’s built on a 34-millimeter tube for unparalleled light transmission. The windage and elevation adjustments are in tenth of mil, and the elevation turret sports the Gen2 zero stop, which helps shooters effectively return to zero faster and without issue. The DMR II has the G3 reticle, which George Gardner created exclusively for Bushnell. The DMR II can be found at your local gun shop for $1,600.
