The United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) is based at Fort Benning, Georgia.  The unit has had the mission of being the best marksmen and women in international shooting sports since the unit was established in the 1950’s.  Members of the AMU make up about half of the members of the United States Olympic Shooting Team, competing in international shotgun sports, in international rifle competition, and in precision pistol and airgun competition. The newest members of the unit are top competitors in the action pistol sports.

In addition to representing the United States in world-class competition, the USAMU is also charged with training active duty soldiers to improve their combat marksmanship skills. Members of the unit travel world-wide to conduct training for units heading into the war zones.

The newest development by the unit is the Squad Designated Marksman program that trains one member of each infantry squad in long-range combat marksmanship using an accurized M-16 A-2 with Trijicon ACOG sight.  The SDM accurized heavy barrel rifle is developed and produced by the AMU Gunsmith Section that supports all AMU activities.

We’ve invited members of the Action Pistol Team and the Army Shotgun Team to join us this season as instructors for a series of Pro Tips teaching lessons to help improve your shooting skills. They will show you each week how to shoot Army Strong!
